What we do
Community Kitchen prepares thousands of nourishing meals each week for people who are hungry, homeless, or vulnerable in our city. Meals are prepared and portioned in our kitchen at Holy Trinity Brussels, and then distributed across the city by other NGOs. We also distribute meals from Holy Trinity and operate a food bank*.
* For all these activities we are authorised by AFSCA.
Who we cook for
The majority of our meals are distributed by the Red Cross at the Humanitarian Hub (Av. du Port 94/100, 1000 Brussels). Every day hundreds of people in need, mainly refugees and asylum seekers, come to the Hub for food and other services. The Red Cross relies on NGOs, like Community Kitchen, to provide the meals they distribute twice a day, 7 days a week.
Why we cook
We cook to feed people in need in our community. But we also want to build community among the volunteers who join the project. Community Kitchen provides a safe and welcoming space for volunteers from all walks of life, including refugees or others in precarious situations who want to be involved in useful activity, make friends and learn new skills.
How We Cook
Our daily challenge is to prepare large quantities of food for a culturally diverse group, within just two hours and on a tight budget of 30 cents per meal! We prepare tasty, well spiced vegetarian dishes, with an emphasis on lentils, chickpeas and beans to provide protein and pasta or rice for energy. For vegetables, we rely heavily on unsold organic produce which is perfectly good to cook with and would otherwise be wasted.
